The warm weather has moved in with summer now upon us. For many, it’s the best time of the year. Sunshine. Flip flops. Beach weather. The cares of the world are a little easier to bear.
But not for everyone.
The bulk purchasing and supply drives of this quarter continue to be planned by nonprofit organizations as they look to build campaigns based on the multitude of “National Day of…” designations. By using these familiar or donor-friendly days of engagement, organizations can maximize their impact in their communities with a new spin on ongoing needs.
But remember, as summer quickly creeps up on us, the sunny season is the time when many nonprofits begin their back-to-school programs. The excitement permeating the end of the school season is the best time to launch a summer-long back-to-school drive or initiate bulk-purchasing of school supplies to help students and their families prepare for the next school year. Plan ahead for a successful new season by reading up on new ideas and considerations to make your drive a success.
July
On July 9, celebrate National Dimples Day to kick off a hygiene kit drive to provide hygiene resources to those in need. Consider soaps, toothpaste, facial scrubs, and any other items that can make a face shine with dignity.
National Give Something Away Day is marked on July 15. Could there be a more perfect day to symbolize a donation drive? Take a scroll through our current and past drives to stir your imagination and find a drive concept that fits your organization.
Round out the month of July with National Self-Care Day on the 24th. Use this day to launch any donation drive that focuses on hygiene supplies, clothing, books, or any other item that enables individuals to feel good about themselves and to celebrate self-care.
August
August kicks off with National Coloring Book Day on the 1st. With that, your organization can kick off a coloring book drive or highlight your back-to-school initiatives to bring joy to the hearts and homes of little ones (and big ones alike!). We all remember the joys of coloring and it brings a sense of calm to a family setting as well. Why not use this day to bring joy into the lives of children and families?
Combine two national days for one drive! National Underwear Day on August 5th and National Wiggle Your Toes Day on August 6th give rise to the perfect time to celebrate an undergarment drive. These often-overlooked items may not seem glamorous, but for people in need socks and underwear can be life-changing.
August 6 ushers in National Fresh Breath Day and it’s an ideal time to launch an oral hygiene drive. Items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss or floss sticks can give a sense of confidence to someone in need. Oral hygiene is also connected to overall health meaning your drive is helping to give the gift of health and wellbeing.
August 9 celebrates National Book Lovers Day and presents an ideal date to kick off a book drive like this one in Piedmont or this one in Charlotte. A book drive can target specific types of books in need of themes – such as STEM or social emotional needs. Books open up a new world to children and youth and are often considered an expense that some families cannot afford. Help a child discover their love of reading.
September
September kicks off with National Food Bank Day. As the demand on food banks continues to rise, your organization can help meet the need with a food drive in support of your pantry or local food bank. This practical way to meet the needs of area residents is a great way to impact your community.
National Read a Book Day arrives on September 6. Celebrate with a book drive kick-off or couple this with the conclusion of the National Book Lovers Day drive from August and use this day as the distribution day.
Autumn creeps up quickly with its arrival on September 22. Celebrate the equinox by kicking off a winter clothing drive like this one in Piedmont. Before we know it the cooler weather blows in and we can help families get set for a safe and warm winter season.
